Sometimes the most amazing friendships start with a little conflict. Similarly, the long history of Olubanji Holmes with Prota Software started with a pirated copy. Mr. Holmes is the owner of the company, Holmz Infrastructure Limited. Located in Lagos, Nigeria, the company delivers structural engineering projects for concrete and steel buildings, provides services for structural design, construction, and project management.
When queried about the origin of his experience with ProtaStructure Suite, Mr. Holmes replied:
“It was around 7 years ago; we took a job. It was a great project, beautiful but complex. The complexity of the project made us a bit hesitated because it was a totally different work than what we had delivered before. Then, we started looking for a suitable structural engineering software. We had simple criteria for the software we were using- its capabilities, ease of use and accuracy of results. One day, a colleague suggested Probina Orion as a comprehensive structural engineering design and analysis software. He gave us a pirated copy, which I installed. Initially, I found PB Orion to be satisfactory, however soon after I began experiencing errors and incorrect results. Additionally, I could not sign off on any projects due to the unlicensed software. After conducting some research, I was very impressed by Prota Software’s all-in-one structural engineering solution and decided to become a licensed user. I contacted the Prota Software Team and began a two-week trial period, during which I explored all the essential features and tools of ProtaStructure. At the end of the trial period, I became a licensed user and my journey with ProtaStructure began.”

When asked about the most challenging aspect of structural engineering projects, the experienced engineer Mr. Holmes noted that construction posed the greatest difficulty.
He explained, “When executing a project, my primary focus is the construction phase. As lead engineer, I have control over the model, computer, and design throughout the project-delivery. However, changes made by the construction crew at the site can blackhole the entire structure, because each building is a complex system. Luckily, ProtaStructure helps relieve me from worry. It enables me to redesign the building as necessary, assess the ramifications of making new decisions on the structure, and make corrections on-site. The BIM integration feature of the software is extremely helpful in this regard, as it allows me to quickly reconfigure the system, double-check the detailing, and generate ProtaDetails and ProtaSteel drawings efficiently.”
